RESTORE Scar Therapy

What is Scar Therapy?

Scar therapy is a method used to help remodel scar tissue which has developed as a result of surgery, injury or a burn. It is a method of non-invasive physical therapy developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions. Using specialist scar massage and fascial release, therapy tools and self care advice to promote healthy recovery.

Scar therapy is often considered the most effective on immature scar tissue that is less that two years old. Scar therapy is also very effective on older scars and can provide relief for long term symptoms caused by scar tissue.

Who Can Benefit from Scar Therapy?

Anyone who has a scar as a result of surgery or an accident which includes burn injuries can benefit from scar therapy. Even mature scars can benefit from specialist scar therapy treatment. The body is renewing its cells all the time and with scar therapy treatment, stimulating the scar can bring beneficial improvements and relief to long standing symptoms caused by the scar tissue.

How can Scar Therapy Help?

  • Reduce pain and sensitivity
  • Release tightness of the scar tissue that causes discomfort
  • Improve range of movement by reducing the tightness and improving mobility between layers of skin, fascia and muscle
  • Improve sensation that may have been lost or decreased on the scar and surrounding area
  • Stimulate change to scar tissue on the skin surface and to adhesions or fibrosis in the underlying tissue.
  • Promote functional and cosmetic improvements
  • Support emotional wellbeing

When Can I Start Treatment?

Scar therapy can start once all the scabs are gone and the skin has recovered. This is usually 6-14 weeks after a surgery. This depends on how invasive or complicated the surgery and recovery has been. For serious injury or major surgery I may ask to contact your consultant to check if there are any restrictions or concerns for commencing treatment. For older scars treatment usually can start immediately.

How Many Treatments will be Needed?

The number of treatments will vary depending on the issue, age of scar and individual. Usually 4 to 8 treatments every 2 to 6 weeks is recommended but this may vary.

The first session will include an assessment, discussion of your individual treatment plan, apply the treatment and provide home-care advice. Each session can bring an incremental improvement and this can very often already be felt in the first session.

What Should I Wear to the Treatment?

Wear comfortable clothes such as tracksuit pants/shorts or loose fitting clothing. I will need to access the areas around your scar during treatment. If the scar is along the bikini line such as for a caesarean or hysterectomy scar only the scar and 1-2cm into the bikini area needs to be exposed. Your modesty is always respected.
